Olympic Hope

D. Munkhbayar is one of sportswomen who, Mongolians hope, will bring in an Olympic gold from Sidney. Her list of achievements in pistol shooting is impressive enough to spark high hopes.

Since her first victory at the world juniors championship a decade ago, she won altogether four golden, one silver and two bronze medals from various world tournaments. At the Seoul Olympics she was the third in pistol shooting and now holds the right to participate in the Sidney 2000 in two categories. Presently she stays in Germany studying and preparing for the Olympics.

“I am not greedy at all but the best award for me was the money the government paid for my achievements.. They allowed me to pay through my studies, to have a professional coach and not to bother about life expenses for myself and my daughter,” says D. Munkhbayar. “Now I have better facilities than many my colleagues, and my trainer is Uve Risterer from Germany who helped many sportsmen to win Olympic medals.

“But this is not a guarantee of future victories. Even poor training facilities can not prevent one from becoming a champion. Now I am very busy training and studying simultaneously. My daughter also needs attention,” says Munkhbayar who visited Mongolia on her winter holidays.

Munkhbayar in Mongolian means Eternal Joy, and we hope that she will bring much joy from Sidney 2000 to her funs.
