TRANSPORTATION

Ulaanbaatar City

Public bus and trolley bus are the main transportation means in the capital city. Shuttle buses are more recent but speedy way of getting around. All public transportation, but trolleybus costs 200 Togrog per ride irrelevant of destination or length. Trolleybus costs 100 Togrog per ride. Buses start at 6 AM and stop around 10PM. Private buses and shuttle buses run until 11 PM.

Taxis There are 37 taxi companies and a fleet of more than 3,000 taxis in capital city alone. Also any passing car can be waived down to serve as taxi as many private car driver like to make few side bucks. However, we would strongly recommend to use yellow color City Taxi as best maintained and safe taxi service.

The taxi fare is same - Togrog 250 per kilometer or $ .24 cents. It is not necessary to give a tip but a driver will gladly accept if offered.

Again it is possible to negotiate the price in case you plan to hire a taxi for several hours or days. Usually, taxi drivers are quite happy with Togrog 3,000 per hour if it does not involve much driving around. Such arrangement comes handy in case you plan to travel to short distance from the city, places like Terelj Park , Gachuurt Village or Manzushir Monastery.

Countryside

Planes offer the fastest way of getting around the country. Usually two or three flights per week are available to major province centers onboard of an old Antonov - 24 propeller plane. Recently a more modern Fokker plane has been brought by Air Mongolia private company to serve to some province centers. A plane ticket may cost more for foreigners, especially to such popular tourist destinations as Gobi Desert or Huvsgul Lake .

Intercity shuttle buses is the most common way of traveling for Mongols. Buses to all province centers depart daily from the Intercity Bus Terminal near the Central Railroad Station. From province centers one can rent out a sturdy, Russian made jeep or van to travel around. On the main roads small canteens and cafes are available offering basic noodle soup and fried meat with rice. It is possible to order boiled water and soft drinks like Cola, Pepsi, various juices.

Cars. It is possible to hire a Russian made military jeep or van for traveling in countryside. The price is usually Togrog 300 or $ 0.25 per kilometer but when the distance goes well over one hundreds it is possible to negotiate. Ride on bigger jeeps like Nissan, Land Cruiser or Cherokee will cost $ .50 per kilometer. The price includes the cost of petrol and a driver's pay.

It is crucial to find a reliable, experienced driver as well as to check the car. Missing this point may result in a few days long waiting amidst nowhere for a car to pass.

Drop us an email and we will arrange you a car rent for US$ 25 fee.
