Where to stay? Practically, the capital city of Ulaanbaatar offers a variety of places to stay, whether overnight or for a few months. Everything depends on your taste and budget.

Beware that during the peak of tourist season falling on the Naadam Festival on July 10-13, it is practically impossible to find a hotel to stay. Booking in advance is strongly advised.

Several guest houses sprung in the last years offering one bed for $3 – $5 per night. Usually these are residential apartments converted into hostels so count for a 2-3 beds in one room and shared kitchen, toilet and shower. Though sometimes it is possible to get one separate room for $ 10-15, especially during off-season period. Some hostels offer breakfast and usually boiled water and phone.

A private apartment can be a nice alternative allowing flexibility of rates and convenience of location. The prices vary depending on duration, number of rooms and amenities.
Average one month long rent of a one room downtown apartment with basic furniture and amenities will be about US$ 150-200 per month or less than US$ 8 per day.
Usually apartment owners want an advance payment in lump sum, but it is advisable to pay on a monthly or quarterly basis and sign a leasing contract.
Services of a cook or cleaning lady also are available through The Mongol Messenger's classified section or from expats who can recommend a reliable one.

Beware that very few hotels are available in countryside outside Darkhan and Erdenet towns and some province centers along popular tourist routes like Moron , Huvsgul Lake or Dalanzadgad in South Gobi .
Hotels that are available usually offer very basic room with two beds for $ 15 per night.
Beyond province centers the most popular accommodation is so called gher camp. It usually comprises of 10 to 60 ghers or traditional Mongolian dwelling, separate dining hall (usually a spacious log cabin or larger gher) and toilet/shower cabins. Prices range from $ 20 to $ 30 per night including meals and $ 10- 15 without meals.
Tourists can generally camp with a tent and sleeping bags. However it is advisable to camp away from settlements to avoid theft and overly curious local youngsters. Also be aware of the camping in protected areas and parks.
